Need ideas for different things to do? East Sussex activities already include everything from building your own car, designing a garden for elves and fairies, and rockpool rambles to learning woodland survival skills and artist open days. More entries are being added daily between now and 28 May.
Here’s a taster of what’s already on offer across East Sussex…
Artist’s Open Studio, Forest Bank Farm, Nutley, Uckfield – come and view the pastel landscapes of renowned Ashdown Forest artist, Juliet Murray. Includes tips and demos on pastel techniques and materials used. There’s a 10% discount on limited edition prints.
Wilderness Wood, Hadlow Down, Uckfield – hosting a range of activities for youngsters throughout Countryside 2011. Search for creepy crawlies and find out how they live; join an expedition deep into the woods and build shelters from woodland materials; make a garden for elves and fairies; learn how to build and light a campfire then cook sausages and marshmallows. Special ‘2 for 1’ drinks voucher .
So Sussex, Barcombe near Lewes – fishing trips, cycling tours, guided hikes, canoeing, and woodland activities. There’s a 10% discount when you book through the Countryside 2011 website.
Glorious Mud, Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, Rye – pull on your wellies and investigate the saltmarsh at the nature reserve, looking for the creepy crawlies that hide in the mud.
Red Earth Chalk Walk: Wild Plant Foraging, Near Pycombe, Brighton – learn how our ancestors used spring plants, and spend the day gathering and preparing remedies and wild food.
Sponsored Dog Walk, Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare, Ringmer – walk the perimeter of Raystede’s grounds to help raise money for them. There will be a barbecue plus treats for your four-legged friends.
Twilight Meet, Forestry Commission car park, Littlington Road, Seaford – enjoy an evening round the camp fire in Friston Forest. Learn how to build a campfire and enjoy some food cooked over the embers. Take a walk through the forest as the sun sets, discover where badgers live and wait for bats to come out.
Children’s Music-making Workshop, The Observatory Science Centre, Herstmonceux, Hailsham – this interactive workshop will explore the nature of sound and how the ear works with cool experiments. Make some instruments, make some noise, and have lots of fun!
