Try out the Mondraker Bike

“We are very excited about selling these bikes,” says David Cole, owner of Quench. “Mondraker has been receiving a lot of attention in the market place and to have them on site is great news. The bikes are extremely well engineered. With their ‘Stealth’ frame technology and ‘Zero Suspension’ system, they’re awesome bikes to ride – light, fast & efficient. We also have demo models of the Factor and Foxy range, which is great news for the customer as they can try before they buy. I was so impressed with them that I bought myself a Foxy RR after just one ride.”

Quench is working with Silverfish to host a number of demo days at Bedgebury for the public to try out their full range of bikes. The first dates are Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th July. Advance booking isn’t necessary.

The Darling Buds of May television series is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year and a new visitor trail is being launched to capture the Larkins’ ‘Perfick’ Kent.

Copyright ITV

Catherine Zeta Jones as Mariette

The Darling Buds of May trail has been designed to show that the idyllic Kent seen in the series can still be found today, and to encourage visitors to come and experience the produce and lifestyle the county has to offer.

The trail will be available to download from 15 July at http://www.kent.gov.uk/filmoffice <http://www.kent.gov.uk/filmoffice> and to celebrate the launch, there will be a competition to win a ‘Perfick’ Darling Buds break for two. The prize includes a night at the luxurious Elvey Farm, a tour of Biddenden Vineyards, dinner at the Dering Arms and a trip on the Kent & East Sussex Railway, complete with cream tea.

Entries can be made by completing a short questionnaire on the website, or by visiting the Darling Buds of May stand at the Kent County Show from 15-17 July, where there will also be a special trail activity for children.

The trail has been put together by Kent County Council, Produced in Kent and Visit Kent. While movie trails have been created for the county before, this is the first time that filming locations have been brought together with Kent producers and visitor attractions to maximise the impact of film tourism.

Visitors will be able to get a glimpse behind the scenes of the much loved series at some of the locations used for filming, including home of the Larkin family, Buss Farm in Bethersden, and Ma and Pop Larkin’s local pub, The Black Horse, in Pluckley.

The trail also includes a scenic walking route, which includes some of Kent’s famous orchards and takes in Pluckley Church where the wedding of Mariette and Charley was filmed.

Local produce and home-grown food played a starring role in the series because they were very much part of the idyllic lifestyle. For a taste of Darling Buds of May country, visitors can pick from a range of options on the trail from ice cream and cheese makers to wine and fruit juice producers, or they can stock up on local produce at one of the featured farm shops.

The series was set in 1950s Kent and, to step back in time, the trail includes agricultural museums, working windmills and historic vehicles, or there’s the option of just sitting back and enjoying the countryside from the Kent and East Sussex Railway.

Kent County Council Cabinet Member for Customer and Communities, Mike Hill, said:

“We have had tremendous success in the past capturing film tourism with projects like the Other Boleyn Girl movie map. This lovely series has provided an opportunity to go a step further and generate interest in local produce and visitor attractions as well as filming locations.

“Tourism is absolutely vital for Kent’s economy and I am delighted that this new trail will give us the chance to show off some of the wonderful sights, tastes and entertainment that our county has to offer.”

Oxfordshire’s Glorious Gardens

Why not find out what beautiful gardens you could visit in Oxfordshire this summer? There are a wealth of options, large and small, formal or country gardens, all in wonderful settings. Gardeners and garden-lovers will find plenty to learn from and admire, and there are even tours to take part in.

Oxfordshire has some of the most glorious, varied, historic and interesting gardens in Britain – just what you’d expect for a county of rolling green hills, stately homes and honey-coloured stone buildings.

There are formal gardens, clipped and tamed, in awe-inspiring settings as Blenheim Palace where fountains sparkle and dance on the Water Terraces. Or Oxford’s Botanic Garden’s Rose Garden, amid trimmed yew hedges, commemorating Florey, who developed penicillin.

There are exuberant herbaceous borders – a speciality of Oxford – on show at Magdalen College, Christ Church, Rhodes House and the Botanic Garden as well as at Waterperry Gardens.

On a grander scale the landscaped glories of Capability Brown’s Blenheim Park or William Kent’s Rousham and Shotover evoke a bygone era of leisure and wealth for the privileged few.

Gardens form a wonderful setting for exhibitions – such as the Chapungu sculptures from Zimbabwe at Waterperry Gardens – and for events such as Art in Action and the Blenheim Battle Proms.

Smaller, private gardens have their glories too – sometimes on show for Britain in Bloom or through the National Gardens Scheme. And throughout the county people work their allotments – each creating their own special, edible garden.

Oxfordshire still boasts several orchards – Waterperry’s produces fresh apple and pear juice of named varieties – from the tangy to the mellow-sweet.

And plants flourish indoors too – Newington Nurseries breed and raise their own magnificent orchids – at their best in winter when gardens outside have been ‘put to bed’. The Oxford Botanic Garden’s glasshouses are a treasure-trove of plants all year round.

An excellent way to visit Oxford’s gardens is with an Official Walking tour booked through the Tourist Information Centre. There are special Garden tours on 25 August and 11 September – or for groups all year by arrangement.

Lyburn Farmhouse Cheesemakers, in the heart of the New Forest, make a wide range of cheese from their own cows, and specialise in a more continental type of soft cheese.

Lyburn farm lies on the northern edge of the New Forest, straddling the small river Blackwater, and has been farmed by the Smales family, and Mike and Judy in particular, for the last 40 years. The river Blackwater rises on some of the high ground of the forest and as the heather and gorse gives way, to the old ancient oak forest, home of the fallow deer, the countryside falls away sharply towards the north. In the bottom of the valley you will find the Hamptworth estate, of which Lyburn farm is part. The name Lyburn, is in fact quite unique, it is derived from the Scottish, lye ‘born’, and burn ‘river’, ‘borne by the river’, and with the Blackwater on either side, the farm certainly is.

Lyburn farm makes a variety of different hand-made cheeses, all of which are made from their own cows’ milk. Although they are pressed, these artisan cheeses are not that close to cheddar cheese. They are, in general, a softer and a more continental type of cheese, with the exception of Old Winchester and Old Smales.

This year, the reserve will be running two special ‘Springwatch – After Dark’ events (Friday 3 & Saturday 4), when staff and volunteers will be searching for some of the site’s exciting nocturnal creatures, including the elusive nightjar. If you would like to join them, places are limited, so please contact the visitor centre on 01798 875851 for further details and to book your place.

Back to the daytime and there will be a mix of drop in activities on the Saturday and Sunday, including a Spring Themed Family Trail (11am – 3 pm) to test your wildlife knowledge; pond dipping (11 am – 1 pm) where you can discover what lurks under the surface of our ponds; and for those looking to take things at a more leisurely pace, there will be a guided walk (1 – 3 pm) with RSPB voluntary guides for a closer look at the reserve’s seasonal delights.

For further details on these Springwatch Events, including prices, times and booking information, please contact the visitor centre on 01798 875851, or email pulborough.brooks@rspb.org.uk. The reserve is located off the A283 between Pulborough and Storrington.

Following the fantastic piece about Countryside 2011 broadcast yesterday on ITV Meridian, today’s Daily Mirror has a feature in its ‘Welcome to the Weekend’ section, and we hope the Sunday Times will run a piece in the Style Section this Sunday. Yesterday, Countryside 2011 organiser Exbury Gardens welcomed HRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall to the steam railway.

Mariloo with union flags and lamps set in Royal Code

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall continued a Royal tradition of visiting Exbury Gardens in the New Forest yesterday (Thursday 26th May). The couple met staff and Rothschild family members, planted trees and unveiled a plaque to mark the 10th anniversary of the Garden’s steam railway.

His Royal Highness donned an Exbury railwayman’s cap to ride the footplate of the train where he tried his hand at driving the engine, Mariloo, which had been named by his mother, Her Majesty The Queen, almost three years ago. They were escorted by Mr Leopold de Rothschild at whose instigation the Exbury Garden Railway was built.

Members of the public visiting Exbury stopped to watch as the Royal couple each planted an ornamental ash tree (Fraxinus Ornus) on the main lawn. They met civic dignitaries who were introduced by Dame Mary Fagan, the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire and were introduced to Head Gardener, John Anderson, and his deputy, Linda Runnacles, and two volunteers, Gill Mordant and David Hunter.
The Duchess of Cornwall seemed delighted to receive a posy of flowers from three-year-olds, Sorrel Anderson and Henrietta Reynolds, while children from Fawley Nursery School looked on.

At Exbury Central Station they met more Exbury staff, including Commercial Manager Nigel Philpott and Railway Foreman Ian Wilson, and chatted to railway drivers and guards, including 17 year old Alex Clements, believed to be the youngest qualified steam engine driver in the country. They also presented certificates to Jim Langford, Douggie Betteridge and David Shelley who, between them, have clocked up more than 160 years service at the Rothschild-owned Gardens.

Children from Blackfield and Beaulieu Primary Schools joined the train, which was decorated with union flags and bore a sequence of four lamps – the Royal Code – on the front of the engine, which signified that Royalty was aboard.
The visit ended with a private tour of the Gardens.

Mr Leopold de Rothschild said he was delighted to welcome The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall. “We are especially pleased that they came to help us celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Garden Railway,” he said. “Her Majesty the Queen named our latest locomotive, Mariloo and she enjoyed a ride on the railway on two occasions. I am glad that both Their Royal Highnesses were able to travel on Mariloo as well.”

Pebsham Countryside Park Project

The Pebsham Countryside Park Project is an exciting initiative to develop and enhance the green space between Hastings, Bexhill and Crowhurst, an area of approximately 600 hectares (1480 acres) in East Sussex. The intention is to create a sustainable, multi-functional countryside area with space for leisure, relaxation, sport, ecology and education.

The Pebsham Countryside Park was first mooted in 1993 as part of the North Bexhill Strategic Framework, emanating from the ‘strategic gap’ planning policies so as to provide a green space between Hastings & Bexhill.
It was not until 2003 that the Pebsham Countryside Park Steering Group was set up to mastermind the restoration of the landfill areas and to manage to countryside between the towns. The Steering Group was formed of representatives from the three Councils Rother, Hastings, and East Sussex.
With the use of funding from a S106 Obligation from Southern Water and the INTERREG III ‘ Access for All’ project, the Steering Group were able to undertake a major public consultation in 2005, prepare a development strategy and carry out works to footpaths, making the area more accessible to all.

Taking the project forward, a Management Board was set up in 2008 comprising elected representatives from Rother District Council, Hastings Borough Council, East Sussex County Council and Crowhurst Parish Council. Over the next year there are plans to build a path for pedestrians and cyclists along the beach between Bexhill and Hastings, through the coastal part of the proposed park.

Each year a programme of events is put together to encourage people to discover what the park has to offer, from shipwrecks to dinosaurs and tea with the park ranger, there are activities for all.

This is the third year of events and our programme this year is bigger and better than ever with over 48 events, many of them taking place within the Countryside 2011 fortnight.

A great value passport to Great Gardens of Sussex has been launched: visit three of the gardens and enjoy the fourth free of charge!

The Fountain at Nymans

Enjoy a free visit to one of the beautiful gardens of Sussex when you use a Passport from Great Gardens of Sussex.

Great Gardens of Sussex, a partnership of four of the most magnificent and historically important gardens in the country is making a great offer for 2011. Visit three of the gardens and enjoy visiting the fourth garden completely free of charge. To take up the offer you just have to use a Great Gardens of Sussex Passport.

The four gardens participating in the offer are Wakehurst, High Beeches, Borde Hill and Nymans. As many visitors are members of the National Trust and can therefore visit Nymans and Wakehurst free of charge, this is a particularly attractive offer as it means that they only have to pay to visit one of the four gardens.

Visitors can pick up a Great Gardens of Sussex Passport free of charge from any of the participating gardens. The Passport must be stamped at the ticket office of each garden that they visit. Alternatively a copy of the Passport may be printed from http://www.greatgardensofsussex.com. The Passport offer is valid until December 2011 but please not that Borde Hill and High Beeches close for the season in the autumn.

All the gardens in Great Gardens of Sussex are within fifteen minutes drive of each other in mid Sussex and together they offer a uniquely rich and varied choice of gardens. All are full of rare and fascinating plants and are linked by history and family connections.

As David Hardman of Wakehurst says; “We are lucky to have four exceptional gardens close together in mid-Sussex. The Great Gardens of Sussex Passport offers everyone the chance to enjoy visiting these beautiful gardens, at an exceptionally attractive price. “

High Beeches Gardens is a beautiful and historic woodland and water garden with many rare plants and a lovely wildflower meadow. For peace and tranquillity there is nowhere better. http://www.highbeeches.com

Wakehurst is Kew’s country garden with year round interest and a stunning collection of plants from around the globe as well as the internationally renowned Millennium Seed Bank. http://www.kew.org

Borde Hill is a most romantic English garden with many intimate ‘living garden rooms’, including glorious Rose and Italian gardens, magnificent parkland, fine lakes and woodland. http://www.bordehill.co.uk

Nymans is renowned for atmosphere and beauty as well as rare and important plants, parkland walks, lakes and woodland, herbaceous borders, ruins and temples. http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/nymans

Please note that free entry using the Passport excludes special event days.
