Last Chance to See Bluebells
Posted on 25/05/10
In the cool cover of the woodlands, bluebells are still in flower. Here’s where to catch their final flourish.
The bluebell season was slow to start in many parts of South East England this year and the cool shade provided by rich woodlands sheltered displays from the fierce heat of the weekend.
As a result, in many places, magical carpets of bluebells are still in flower. This is the time to catch them in their final glory.
The top tip is to head for the Chiltern Hills, where ancient beechwoods provide the setting for countless spectacular displays. The visitor website for the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty will set you on the right woodland track.
You can still find Bluebell Watch on the National Trust website – always a first stop for outdoor options. A quarter of their woodland is ancient or semi-natural – ideal for bluebells. There’s also time to catch the finale of the Ramblers Bluebell Strolls Season of guided walks. Their expert-led walks are free, open to all, and offer a chance to see some of Britain’s most beautiful woodland and countryside at its loveliest.
