Enjoy hands-on science and discovery among the domes and telescopes of a world famous astronomical observatory within the grounds of beautiful Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex.
Between the 29 May to the 6 June in addition to the normal hands-on exhibits at the Observatory Science Centre there will be daily telescope tours and science shows which are included in the admission price. There will be three Telescope Tours per day usually at 12pm, 2pm & 4pm and three Science Shows per day usually at 11am, 1pm & 3pm.
If you are interested in Radio Astronomy then discover more over a 5 week evening course starting this Wednesday 19 May. Our eyes are only sensitive to visible light. What would the sky look like if we could see radio waves? This introductory course on radio astronomy focuses on our solar system and what the amateur radio astronomer can achieve. No previous knowledge of astronomy or radio is necessary. The course includes a brief introduction to the history and development of radio astronomy and how it has extended the understanding of how the Universe works, together with a look at the limitations on making observations. It will look at the work of some of the major radio telescopes around the world and some of the major discoveries. You will learn how a radio telescope works and how the data is recorded including an insight into data analysis. A simple home observatory will be set up to study Jupiter, the Sun, Meteoroids and the effects of the Earth’s atmosphere. You will also be told how amateur observations play a key role in the overall understanding of our place in the Universe and be given an introduction to SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence).
Other events include half day workshops running for children including a ‘Music’ workshop and ‘Car Power’ workshops.
