SUNDAY 16 MAY: The Alresford Watercress Festival - a great day out!
Posted on 13/05/10
Every year, some 10,000 people gather to celebrate this versatile local crop with an action-packed day of food and fun, music and dance. A fabulous FREE day out for all the family!
From 10.00 – 16.00 on Sunday 16th, the Georgian market town of Alresford will be celebrating its famous local crop at the Alresford Watercress Festival.
The centrepiece is a huge food market, with cookery demonstrations from award-winning chefs and food writers. Round the corner, there’s a large Festival Market of arts, crafts, jewellery and clothing, items for house and garden and much else besides.
The street cavalcade at 10.30am is a festival highlight, with jazz musicians, Morris dancers and local school children accompanying the Watercress King and Queen atop a horse and cart distributing the first of the season’s watercress harvest to festival goers.
The “World Watercress Eating Championships” are also back by popular demand and are open to all-comers aged 18 or over. You could also take a tour of a watercress farm or a train ride on the Watercress Line between Ropley and Alresford.
It’s all happening against a backdrop of street music and dancing, with circus skills workshops, face painting, nail art, hair braiding, a magician, treasure trails, climbing wall and other activities to keep the children busy and entertained.
