Watch out for winter birds at the spectacular Winter Wildfowl
Watch from 18 – 20 December at Pulborough in West Sussex.
There may be snow on the horizon but some spectacular birds are arriving at the RSPB Pulborough Brooks reserve for their warm winter break. Amongst the exciting winter arrivals are the Bewick’s Swans, who come to the Arun Valley each year from their summer breeding grounds in Siberia. The first of them touched down on 11 December. There are 8 to date and up to 50 are expected over the next few weeks. The swans will stay in the valley until March, feeding out in the fields by day and roosting near water at night.
Spot them on The ‘Winter Waterfowl Watch’ which takes place between 2 pm and 4.30 pm on Friday 18 – Sunday 20 December. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to show visitors the thousands of wintering ducks, geese, swans and waders as they dabble, dive and feed across the flooded brooks, before settling down to roost for the night. Usual admission fees apply. Contact the visitor centre on 01798 875851 or e-mail pulborough.brooks@rspb.org.uk for further details.
